Introduction

University CPD accredited Preoperative Assessment Healthcare Assistant Course. This course serves as an introduction to the role of the Healthcare Assistant in Preoperative Assessment but also serves as update for more experienced staff. The course would also be suitable for assistant practitioners (band 4) or are newly employed within preoperative assessment. Both Healthcare Assistants and Assistant Practitioners are required to working under the supervision of a Registered Practitioner.

The course includes regulation, delegation, competency, public health, medicines management, observations, neck and airway assessment, preoperative investigations & ECG recording and checklist.

The aim of this CPD module is to provide the Healthcare Assistant with the building blocks for safe and evidenced-based practice in Preoperative Assessment. This module has three elements. The first one being a live virtual teaching day via our Zoom pro platform then 3 months access to our online learning resources, followed by assessment of competencies practice. All three elements have a clear focus on high quality and safe clinical practice and are based on a sound evidence based, clinical policies, guidelines and best practice.

The CPD module utilises a variety of teaching methods to ensure that the lessons are interesting and relevant to practice. You will find unique expert video presentations and relevant key resources. These learning materials are essential in meeting the learning outcomes and for completing the competences in practice. 

At the end of the online element of the course you will be asked to complete a quiz. There is no pass mark and an explanation will be provided with the correct answer to further advance you knowledge. Providing you complete all the lessons including the evaluation form a certificate of completion will then be forwarded to you. You will then need to complete the competencies in practice with the support of a competent mentor/supervisor or colleagues.

The module is equivalent to a minimum of 11 hours CPD (7 virtual, 4 online) plus additional hours to complete competencies in practice with their supervisor.

You are encouraged to include both the certificate, learning outcomes and the completed competency framework within your professional portfolio and your work-based appraisal process as evidence of your continuing professional development. 


Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding why there has been a development of the HCA role in Preoperative Assessment. Can explain the drivers, understands the process of delegation and the RCN first steps.

  • Understands the importance of the specialised knowledge and skill-set required for HCA practice in preoperative assessment.

  • An understanding how lifestyle can affect health and outcomes from anaesthesia & surgery. Understands the role of primary care with regard to the public health agenda.

  • Gain a greater understanding in peri-operative medicines Management and applying this in practice under supervision.

  • Be able to take an assess a patient history either via telephone, virtual platform or face-to-face if delegated. Also will be able to assess an electronic self-assessment from a low-risk patient.

  • Assessing baseline observations and understands when to report to the Registered Practitioner.

  • Is able to perform a neck and airway assessment in a low risk patient.

  • Able to implement Preoperative Assessment investigation policy under supervision from a Registered Practitioner.

  • Able to record and ECG effectively so that the results can be triaged easily.

  • Understands how to apply a basic checklist to an ECG so that abnormalities can be reported to the Registered Practitioner.
