Healthcare Assistant in Preoperative Assessment

This course serves as an introduction to the role of the healthcare assistant in Preoperative Assessment but also serves as update for more experienced staff. Course covers public health, medicines management, observations, Preoperative investigations & ECG recording and checklist.

Learning Outcomes

1. Understanding of the development of the HCA role in Preoperative Assessment. Can explain the drivers, understands the process of delegation and the RCN first steps.
2. Understands the importance of the specialised knowledge and skill-set required.
3. An understanding how lifestyle can affect health and outcomes from anaesthesia & surgery. Understands the role of primary care with regard to the public health agenda.
4. Gain up-to-date knowledge in Medicines Management and applying this in practice under supervision.
5. Be able to take an objective Preoperative Assessment history if trained and this has been delegated by a registered practitioner.
6. Assessing baseline observations and understands when to report to the Registered Practitioner.
7. Able to implement Preoperative Assessment investigation policy under supervision from a Registered Practitioner.
8. Able to record and ECG effectively so that the results can be interpreted easily.
9. Understands how to apply a basic checklist to an ECG so that abnormalities can be reported to the Registered Practitioner

Healthcare Assistant in the Hospital Setting

Healthcare Assistants are an integral part of the hospital workforce. They provide much of the hands-on care required for patients. This course teaches the necessary skills so that the Healthcare Assistant can be confident that they can be an effective member of the clinical team. Course includes delegation, observations, NEWS 2 scoring, Fluid balance, ECG recording & checklists. 

Outcomes

1. Understanding of the development of the HCA role in the Hospital Setting. Can explain the drivers, understands the process of delegation and the RCN first steps.
2. Understands the importance of the specialised knowledge and skill-set required for hospital practice and how this differs from community care.
3. An understanding how lifestyle can affect health and outcomes. Understands the role of Healthcare Assistant with regard to the public health agenda.
4. Is able to record observations and calculate a NEWS 2 score and document this on the appropriate chart.
5. Understands when to report to the Registered Practitioner.
6. Able to record fluid balance accurately by measuring fluid intake and output.
7. Can provide evidenced-based care to patients with urinary catheters.
8. Able to record an ECG effectively so that the results can be interpreted easily.
9. Understands how to apply a basic checklist to an ECG so that abnormalities can be reported to the Registered Practitioner.

Healthcare Assistant in General Practice

This course equips the Healthcare Assistant to be effective in the GP Practice. It covers public health & health promotion , observations, NEWS 2 scoring, ECG Recording & check-list, Urinalysis, blood glucose, venepuncture & ECG recording. Competencies are provided so the practitioner can work through these with their mentor to ensure skill acquisition.

Learning Outcomes

1. Understanding of the development of the HCA role in General Practice.
2. Can explain the drivers, understands the process of delegation and the RCN first steps.
3. Understands the importance of the specialised knowledge and skill-set required.
4. An understanding how lifestyle can affect health and has a good understanding of the public agenda..
5. Assessing baseline observations and understands when to report to the Registered Practitioner.
6. Is able to calculate a NEWS 2 score
7. Is able to perform basic wound care using an aseptic technique. Also has a good understanding of different wound dressings and their application.
8. Able to record and ECG effectively so that the results can be interpreted easily.
9. Understands how to apply a basic checklist to an ECG so that abnormalities can be reported to the Registered Practitioner.
10. Can administer an B12 injection intramuscularly
11. Able to assist in a vaccination clinic and administered vaccinations once deemed competent by mentor.
